And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?" And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear: If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. [Rev 13:1-10 ESV]
In part one we met the Beast From the Sea. Today we are going to take a look at the timing of the events around the Beast From the Sea.
What is the Timing of This Event?
In the structural flow of Revelation, Chapter 13 is considered a parenthetical or "interlude" discussion. It does not carry the chronological narrative forward in the same way the Seals, Trumpets, or Bowls do. Instead, it "zooms in" to provide the backstory and character profiles of the enemies the Church faces during the period already established by the Trumpets.
The Structural Placement
Think of Chapters 12 through 14 as a deep-dive explanation that happens between the 7th Trumpet and the 1st Bowl. The 7th Trumpet (11:15) announces that "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord." Revelation 12:1–14:20 are the parenthetical backstory that is told before the final "bowls of wrath" are poured out. In this pause between the trumpets and the bowl judgments, John pauses the timeline to explain why the judgment is coming by identifying the Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet.
The Timing Within the Vision
While the chapter is parenthetical, the events described within the chapter have a very specific timing:
Triggered by the Dragon’s Fall: Revelation 12 shows Satan being cast out of heaven. In his rage, he stands on the shore and "summons" the Beast From the Sea (13:1).
The 42-Month Window: The text explicitly limits the Beast’s authority to 42 months (v. 5). In the broader context of Revelation, this is the same period as the 1,260 days in Revelation 12:6 and the "time, times, and half a time" in Revelation 12:14.
The Great Tribulation: Most scholars place this timing in the latter half of the "70th Week of Daniel," specifically the period of intense persecution before the final return of Christ.
A helpful way to view the timing of the events is that the Trumpets show the judgment from God’s perspective looking down, while Chapter 13 shows the same period from the Saints' perspective looking at the earthly powers they are resisting.
Tomorrow we will explore the theological implications of the passage and the impact of this passage on the church.
